2021 PATHS-UP Students on Summer Internships
It is no secret that internships are not always easy to come by, but this summer saw four students each with an internship; Andres Rodriquez, Sayali Besare, Lauren Yamthe, and Jesse Fine. Through connections with PATHS-UP, Sayali was able to work with Babson Diagnostics while Jesse was able to work with the FDA. Andres and Lauren procured their internships at Carl Zeiss Meditec. and Boston Scientific, respectively, through the connections they made at conferences and with colleagues.
While not all of the work these interns have completed directly relates to PATHS-UP and its mission, each of the students was able to take away valuable technical and soft skills which they will be able to apply to their research when they return. One thing all the students had in common was that by going on an internship, they found out what direction they want to go with their future career aspirations. Andres, Sayali, and Lauren all want to work in Research and Development while Jesse wants to work in computational modeling in device design, testing, and regulation.
Some advice these students have for anyone seeking an internship is to:
• utilize your network or the network of others
• keep a lookout for advertised opportunities
• tailor your resume to the position/job title you are applying for
• apply early (5-6 months in advance)
Internship hunting is almost like fishing, you have to drop in the right bait and see who will catch it. You may not get a bite or catch anything the first time, but with perseverance, you will find something. Congratulations to all the students who acquired internships this past summer and good luck to those looking for one in the future. Remember to keep PATHS-UP in mind when looking for an internship as there are many connections within the organization in which you can utilize.
